RAIN Garden Groundbreakers
Neighbourhoods take action to soak up rain and protect their homes from flooding.
Groundbreakers helps people and community groups take deliberate action to minimize the incidence and impacts of basement flooding through building of multiple flood prevention retrofits including rain gardens and more.
Rain gardens and other retrofits are installed using a neighbourhood work party (barn-raising) model that increases ownership and understanding of the problem of stormwater volume, flooding and the potential for further neighbourhood action.
Community partners include environmental groups, homeowner associations, housing cooperatives, municipalities and Business Improvement Associations.
Currently being implemented in Kingston, Peterborough and Thunder Bay.
